Taj Cape Town, the new luxury hotel in the city centre, had barely opened its grand doors and Capetonians were drifting into the hotel at the top of St George’s Mall to sample the food, drink and general experience.
Sales and Marketing director Theo Cromhout said although the opening is mid-February, the hotel is taking limited reservations and bookings and welcoming the general public into the food and beverage outlets. The 176-room hotel is a joint venture between Tata’s Indian Hotels Company and city centre developers Eurocape. It is located in the original South African Reserve Bank and the Board of Executives buildings, opposite the Company’s Garden and St. George’s Cathedral.
The restoration process included the addition of 17 storeys, with walk-out balconies and splendid views over the city. Investment in the two-year project topped R500 million. General Manager, Michael Pownall, says the hotel provides an alternative to the Waterfront that is likely to appeal equally to local and international business and leisure travellers.
“’The heart of Cape Town is right on our doorstep. Sightseeing, culture and history, top restaurants and great nightlife – it’s all here. The national and provincial parliaments, High Court and headquarters of many Cape-based businesses are also conveniently close.
“This is the right hotel in the right location at the right time,” says Pownall. “We’re already almost full over the World Cup, which is the traditional trough season, and encouragingly we’re starting to take bookings beyond that.”
The Taj Cape Town offers 11 different types of rooms, as well as conference, meeting and banqueting facilities. It has three restaurants: The Mint, an all-day restaurant with outside dining under the trees of St. George’s Mall and contemporary interior offering classic meat, poultry and seafood grills; the Bombay Brassiere, a fine-dining Indian restaurant modelled on its famous namesake in London; and The Twankey, a seafood and champagne bar providing snacks, a selection of top South African wines and incorporating a coffee bar that serves light meals.
Taj Cape Town also has 5 of the most luxurious apartments in Cape Town on offer. Apart from living in the lap of luxury in the heart of the Mother City, apartment owners receive world class service and direct access to all of the hotel’s facilities and a number of special privileges.
Each apartment at The Taj Cape Town features expansive living space with walk-out or sit-out balconies, magnificently furnished to Taj specifications, sensational views of Table Mountain, Company Gardens & Historical St Georges Mall. Purchase incentives includes every service from conceierge, twice daily Housekeeping, Chauffeured airport pick-up, 10 credits which would provide either 10 nights in the majority of Taj Luxury Hotels, or 5 nights in The Pierre in New York, Taj Exotica Resorts & spa in Maldives and Lake Palace in Udaipur, India.
